A woman from Huntingdonshire, now living in Uganda, is urging you to donate money for disabled children living in Africa, where she says disabled children are hidden.

Teresha Clark, 27, is one of the founder volunteers of the Spring of Hope project, which aims to help disabled children in rural communities in Uganda.

"I thrive on the whole experience," said Teresha. "I love what I do and to make a difference to a child's life and know that I have had a part to play is the most enormous privilege ever.

"I first went to Uganda on a year out in 2001 and asked the question why I didn't see any children with disabilities," said Teresha, a former pupil at Hinchingbrooke School.

"There is such a stigma attached to children with disabilities that they are physically abused and there is no support for their families."

Teresha returned to Uganda and set up the Spring of Hope project in 2004, and has since run monthly physiotherapy clinics, supported children to have corrective surgery and obtained specialist equipment such as wheelchairs in addition to building relationships with families.

One boy who has benefited greatly from Teresha's work is 17-year-old Bosco, who was born with a deformity which meant that he could not walk, so he manouvered his way about on his knees right up until the start of 2005.

However, help from The Spring of Hope Project has enabled to Bosco to walk properly and Teresha commented that when she visits him and his family, he is often hard to find, such is the extent of his new found independence.

Another example is eight-year-old Prosy, who has hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain). After years of lying on the a mat, Spring of Hope managed to help her sit up with the help of regular physiotherapy, despite a specialist hospital saying that nothing could be done.

However, funds are urgently needed if the good work that Teresha and her team have begun is to continue and flourish.

Spring of Hope volunteers currently travel by rented motorbike, and are looking to buy two for the organisation, costing around £800 each.

However, Teresha was keen to emphasise how far a little money would stretch in Uganda.

"Although we need money for the motorbikes, just £10 will provide calipers to help children to walk, while £20 will provide a special chair for a child."

INFORMATION: If you would like to donate money to the Spring of Hope, please make cheques payable to YWAM Uganda, and send them to 66 Windmill Close, Ellington, Huntingdon, PE28 OAJ.

The Spring of Hope project is part of Youth With a Mission, the international, voluntary interdenominational Christian Organisation, operating in 140 countries across the world.

5 years of care, hundreds helped
Area minister is recognized for work with group aiding at-risk and homeless youths

By LORI RODRIGUEZ
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

The first time minister Joe Williams presided over "street church" for the homeless youths that drift through the Montrose area, he offered up coffee and cookies. Four youngsters showed up.

Five years later, the open air ministry has become a Wednesday night fixture in a parking lot at Yoakum and Lovett. As many as 150 youngsters regularly gather for a hot meal and a healthy dose of ministering.

On one recent Wednesday, lasagna was up for grabs, prepared by one of numerous area churches that help Joe Williams Ministries and the local chapter of Youth With A Mission operate Montrose Street Reach. The weather was damp and daunting, but Williams, now known to youths as "Preacher Joe," was undeterred.

"In five years, I've learned that you can't just hit these kids over the head with a Bible. You have to develop relationships with them," Williams said.

"It's like that saying: 'They don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.' "

Street Reach, with a goal of getting youths off the streets and into productive lives, has placed more than 170 youths into transitional housing and rehabilitation programs since it began.

Williams, 61, an ordained minister, recently was among 12 local individuals and nonprofits recognized for their good works by a Bank of America charitable initiative.

Williams has worked with troubled youth for most of his life. So have Kim and Martin Dale, who head the Youth With A Mission missionary program — but all three agree they found their calling when they partnered to form Street Reach.

"These kids need so much. Even after five years, they still break our hearts," Kim Dale said.

On any given night, she said, there are as many as 1,500 homeless youngsters on city streets. Most use drugs; many sell their bodies. Nearly 13 percent are HIV positive, she estimated.

"We work with prostitutes, drug addicts, alcoholics, you name it. They get addicted to the drama of streets and it becomes a lifestyle," Williams said.

Since creating Street Reach, the leaders have held three memorial services for street youngsters. One HIV-positive boy, whom they had ministered for four years, called the Dales when he landed in the hospital with a 108-degree fever; he had no one else.

"He told us, 'The insanity of my life is gone.' He was ready to die," Kim Dale said.

At its heart, Street Reach is a faith-based program that seeks to get youngsters to renounce sin and embrace a Christian way of life. Williams and the Dales measure their success one person at a time.

"Big Steve" was a drug user who now trains other youngsters as missionaries through Youth With A Mission. Ernest, aka "Olivia," was a drag queen the missionaries wore down bit by bit until he stood at a street church weeping.

"We really had to heal him with prayers and incubate him with love," Kim Dale said.

"He's in Mississippi now working with hurricane victims and wants to be a missionary."

When possible, Williams and the Dales try to reconcile street youths with their families, offering mediation, bus tickets home and other assistance.

They regularly offer youngsters food, clothing, blankets and referrals to jobs, rehabilitation programs, transitional living facilities, HIV testing and other health and social services.

Twice a week, at Heights Christian Church, they offer "Mom's Day Out," a child care program that gives street mothers a chance to look for a job or get career training. They also offer young mothers help with placing babies in stable adoptive homes, if they choose.

"We started noticing kids bringing babies with them to street church," Kim Dale said. "It caught us off guard. It's so much like children making children."

"...Christians can find a million reasons to disagree. But on Dec. 28 and 29, hundreds in the Cedar Valley will push denominational differences aside to stand as one body.

An inaugural 24-hour Christian music festival at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls aims to emphasize the unity of those who follow Christ. Onefest will feature well-known Christian groups including headliner band the Newsboys as well as local musicians, recreational activities, learning and fellowship.

True oneness goes beyond churches "just doing things together," says Walt Rogers, an event organizer. Area pastors and youth ministers organizing the event are praying for something deeper.

"Oneness can be defined as same body, same mind, same spirit," says Rogers of Orchard Hill Church in Cedar Falls. "Jesus prayed for oneness."

Rogers thinks people are ready to start taking that part of the faith more seriously, that churches are starting to agree to disagree. Today's generation is particularly less concerned with denominational lines, adds Rogers, whose personal faith journey includes the Catholic, Presbyterian and Reformed churches.

"People look at the church and they see the church arguing among each other .... as far as strategies and interpretations of the Bible ... ," Rogers says. "I've looked at that as not a positive thing."

Music, music and more

Twenty-four hours. Forty bands. Four hundred-plus volunteers. As many as 8,000 in the audience.

Area youth groups in the Cedar Valley and across Iowa are gearing up for 24 hours of fun. But parents, siblings, grandparents, anyone in the community, is invited too...

T.J. has already invited friends to Onefest and will also attend with three of his siblings, including brother Christian, 10. Christian and T.J. aren't sure if they will be able to keep their eyes open for one whole day, but 24 hours of singing and activities will be a powerful motivation.

"Probably expect a lot of music and a lot of fun," Christian says.

When concert-goers aren't jumping and jiving to music, they can try activities like rock climbing or swimming at the University of Northern Iowa's Wellness and Recreation Center. Attendees can even bring sleeping bags and squeeze in a few hours of sleep, snack at concession stands and sing around a virtual campfire. Learning sessions are scheduled for youth ministers.

Heather Tousignant, assistant athletics director for facilities and operations at the Dome, says Onefest is unique. Organizers, who hope the festival will be an annual event, are already planning for next year.

"We've had events overnight but not with so much going on the whole time," says Tousignant.

Rogers hopes Lutherans, United Methodists, non-denominationalists and all the other churches represented at Onefest, will --- as one body --- share their faith with the world. Organizers are highlighting three ministries --- YWAM or Youth With A Mission, Compassion International and Rain Ministries.

Jeremy Martin, youth pastor at Cedar Valley Community Church in Waterloo, sees signs of churches working together. In Cedar Falls, area youth pastors meet on Mondays to share ideas. Last summer, about a half-dozen churches sponsored Real Encounter, a music-dirt bike ministry event for teens.

"It's good to remember that God's called the church to be one church," Martin says.

Contact Karen Heinselman at 291-1482 or karen.heinselman@wcfcourier.com.

What: Onefest, a 24-hour Christian music festival that promotes unity among Christians

When: 1 p.m. Dec. 28 to 1 p.m. Dec. 29. Doors open at 11 a.m. Dec. 28

Where: UNI-Dome, with activities at the University of Northern Iowa's Wellness and Recreation Center

Who: Area churches are teaming up to bring 40 bands, including the Newsboys, Skillet, Chris Rice, Ginny Owens, Project 86 and Alli Rogers

Tickets: $43 through Dec. 27; $53 at the door; $17 children ages 6 to 11; free children 5 and under
Christianpost.com:
"Last Friday, YWAM International Chairman Lynn Green together with a few Christian companions, were invited to speak at the Grand Mosque in Leeds, England, according to a YWAM news report.

Green told YWAM that God had recently sent him "some unusual opportunities."

"This past Friday I had the privilege and honor of speaking at the Grand Mosque in Leeds," Green said. "The young Muslims who created so much devastation in London on July 7 this year were members of that Mosque and they built the bombs just a few yards from where I spoke."

On July 7, four suicide bombers blew themselves up on a bus and the underground in London, leaving 56 deaths and hundreds of injured. Although the suspects were U.K. natives with Pakistani heritage and Muslim background, many have mistakenly related terrorism to those Muslim ethnic minorities.

According to Green, the current violence in France, along with reactions to the London and Madrid bombings have put Europe in a dangerous place..." Guest lecturer Rod 'White Eagle' Wilson will discuss historical facts about Thanksgiving from a Native American perspective.

The program will be at the Leesburg campus Fine Arts Center Auditorium. LSCC's Equity and Diversity Committee and Student Activities sponsor the event. Wilson, a member of the Wolf Clan of the Cherokee Nation, was born in California and attended the University of Hawaii where he studied philosophy and theater arts. Ordained by the Episcopal Church, he served as a minister to the street people of Honolulu. Wilson and his wife, Alexis, have served for 29 years with Youth With a Mission, an international missions organization. Both have pioneered projects in Kenya that involved setting up schools, an outpatient clinic, a livestock and agricultural program, and the development of East African Relief Services. He has served as dean of the College of Performing Arts at the University for the Nations in Kona, Hawaii, and has taught and traveled to more than 70 nations in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Scandinavia, Asia and the islands of the Pacific. Now residents of Spearfish, S.D., the Wilsons say their vision is to see Native Americans raised to freely express themselves."
