YWAM Disaster Relief Praised

"...East Texas churches, camps, mission agencies and youth training centers not certified by the Red Cross flung open their doors to desperate evacuees.

Youth with a Mission in Lindale, Mercy Ships in Garden Valley and Timberline Baptist Camp took anyone who came to their facilities, turning none away - and not looking for reimbursement.

"The first bus came in the middle of the night, and they just kept coming," said Doug Crawford, Timberline Baptist Camp's director. "I don't know how they even found out about us, but they did, and they were tired, hungry and needed a place to stay. We took them all."

Paul Gastonau and his family found refuge for his autistic son at Youth with a Mission, when he couldn't put him in a Red Cross shelter.

"He never would have survived a shelter like that," Gastonau said in front of his air-conditioned summer cabin with bunk beds. "This place has been a gift from God."

From Lindale to South Tyler, evacuees consistently painted their situation as dire, and those assisting them as kind, generous and giving..."
