Churches and YWAM Shelter Evacuees

"As five city Red Cross shelters began to quickly fill with Hurricane Rita evacuees, officials began to call and ask area churches and schools if they would open their doors to the crush of humanity making its way up U.S. Highway 69.

Shelters in Arp ISD, Troup ISD, Bethel Baptist Church, Winona ISD and Colonial Hills Baptist Church in Tyler became unofficial shelters to assist nearly full Red Cross shelters at Rose Heights Church of God, Lindale First United Methodist Church, Mount Calvary Family Life Center, Lindale First Baptist and First Baptist Church of Tyler. Most of those shelters were over-capacity or near full.

The city of Tyler estimated that approximately 2,000 evacuees are in shelters in Tyler and Smith County without figuring in those housed in hotels or private homes.

The Timberline Baptist Camp and Youth With A Mission, both in the Lindale area, took in a combined 350 evacuees with room for another 40 at YWAM without any contact from the Red Cross and are not included in the cities' totals..."
